Dragon Ball Z litters the video game landscape. The character's are used as a power level frame of reference on forums. It was a huge anime in it's time.

And I'd never seen any of it.

I gave up on Dragon Ball Z about 9 episodes in. Not much was happening and a lot of the episodes were dull. Turned out they were making the anime while the manga was being written, so they stretched things out and added a load of filler. Kai was a re-edit of the series, to get it closer to the manga.

And it's awesome. The show is so impossibly fun. A new season / Saga starts, and something has happened to the hero Goku so he can't fight - maybe he's ill, maybe he's stranded on a distant planet, maybe he's dead. Big new bad, who is exponentially more powerful than last seasons "Most powerful being in the universe!" appears on the scene, and promptly wreaks destruction until a newly levelled-up Goku can get back and fight. Rinse and repeat. It's ridiculous and just so much fun. Some of the main battles must last 10 episodes.

I watched it with the family, which mean the dubbed version and unfortunately they've only done up the end of the Cell Saga. There's another few sagas to get re-dubbed apparently. Can't wait.

Dragon Ball Z Kai is now a frame of reference at home.
