Dark Souls 2 - play slow, enjoy the dread

With the Vive approaching, the last thing I'd planned on doing was getting into a large adventure game. Plus Mad Max is coming in the monthly Humble Bundle so I really didn't need a large adventure game, even if I had fancied sinking my time into one.

But at £8 or so for the full Dark Souls 2 plus DLC expansions, I couldn't resist Smile

I loved Dark Souls 1. So much so that around 100 hours in to the PS3 version, I sold it to trade-up to the PC version. Only to never install it because it's a time sink. Loved it though, always planned to go back.

DS2 has a bit of a mixed reputation, and I guess I should have gone for the recently released Dark Souls 3, but this was so cheap I couldn't turn it down.

And I'm glad I got it. Yes, I suck at it, I'm just about the least patient gamer around. Yet despite my ineptitude I love the game world, even if I never take in the lore along the way. I really should.....

Dripping with atmosphere, and the now expected sense of dread (be careful or you'll die and lose your souls!) I was initially put off by rather garish, last gen graphics engine. Where's the doom and gloom? PC gaming at the rescue. I'm running the game with ReShade and Flawless Widescreen so I can go Ultrawide. It's pretty good Smile

I've only just beaten the first boss, not making it easy for myself by starting on the Deprived class, but I'm having a great time and I find it a nice game to drop in for 30 minutes, die, and then turn it off.

Here are some before ReShade and after ReShade. I'm using a custom ReShade config, adding film grain on top of the colour and RGB curve changes Smile I think the game goes from too-bright-game-like to Fuck-I-can't-see.
