I recently borrow the new PS4 Spider-Man game from a mate. I'd heard it was good, but I didn't expect it to be this good.

The swinging is magnificient. Point and click, you're swinging around New York in next to no time. Upgrading as you go, you end up pretty fast and have a lot of control - with just enough auto-assist to make you look like a bad arse.

Combat is a step up from the Arkham series. I like the Arkham titles I've played, but ultimately the combat was always a bit of a joke; no real need to do anything other than Attack Attack Attack Counter, repeat sequence. Spent a worrying amount of time playing a couple of Arkham tites with my eyes closed testing this combat sequence. Worked most of the time. Sure you look awesome flying around the screen pulling off awesome attacks and awesome combos, but there's only so much awesome you can take when you're not actually, fundamentally, doing anything. It's Batman wish fullfilment.

Spider-Man takes big elements from Arkham but adds the requirement to actually point at the enemies (to a degree), as well as the verticality afforded by being, er, Spider-Man. You're barrelling around kicking arse, swinging to change positions; there's still awesome looking combos so you look awesome, but they feel more earned in this one. It's not perfect, the camera is too close and causes both frustrations and clipping issues at times. It's still great though.

Biggest surprise was the story. Didn't expect to actually be involved in the story. Surprisingly good, lots going on, a good mixture of Spider-enemies, and pretty compelling. Good for other people sitting around watching it as well.

Very impressed with this game. I actually completed it, something rare in my forties, and I grabbed a good amount of the collectibles (which usually felt natural or fun to get, rather than the usual Ubisoft grind - I didn't bother with many Pigeon collections or the time based Challenge awares which often highlighted the games issue with "fine control").

Took a bundle of screenshots, and spent a whole chunk of the game playing with a cell-shaded Spidey because it looked great.
