I've been meaning to pickup a Vive Deluxe Audio Strap for a while. Reviews were pretty good online, only complaint really being about the price. HTC do take the piss with their VR kit prices, but I have a Vive and wanted a better headstrap. Frankly, the one the Vive comes with is poor. Velcro straps holding the headset against your face, it's not very comfortable, and is shockingly poor on such an expensive piece of kit.

So I decided to get as a birthday present, but then immediately opened it up today when it arrived Smile

Typical HTC packaging, which is to say premium and looks the part.

Replacing the old strap on the Vive takes about 5 minutes, it's a very easy job.

Fitting is great. You pretty much twist the dial at the back to tighten on your head (your HEAD, not your face this time!). There's a velcro strap at the top which may need a bit of adjusting for other people, but I think the dial system will be enough adjustment for most people using my headset.

It's so much more comfortable. I've just come out of an hour+ VR session, which I just haven't done in ages. Usually I'm good for a short while, then I sweat, get uncomfortable around the eyes due to the pressure of the headset against my cheeks. The Deluxe Strap keeps a lot of weight on the back of your head, and positioning of the headset itself gets in the correct place pretty much all by itself.

Taking it off is just a few small twists on the dial. No heaving it up over my face or fucking around with velcro every time I put it on.

There's a cable management system as well - on the original headstrap you have to pull the cables up and make a loop at the top to get the straps in the right place. Well, I won't need to do that anymore. And the cables are tied to the rear of the strap so they hang down behind you.

A big bonus is the audio setup. I wasn't originally bothered with it having headphones, but in reality it's a massive bonus not fucking around with my usual (wired) headphones. Just fold them down over your ears. Sound quality was pretty good as well, better than I expected. And being open, you can hear around you in real life as well. No naked dancing around Will with these headphones Sad

I'm really impressed. Headset sits on your head, far more comfortable, and also more secure (which may account for having less eye strain this evening). The fact it's also better designed for being put on and off will make my VR development easier as well.

Anything bad to say? The headphones seem to bounce around a little. Maybe I can tighten them? That's the only negative on the strap I've encountered.

Oh and my hair gets twisted in the dial so taking it off is quite amusing Smile
